The Chinese people attach great importance to the meaning of their names. Having a culturally-appropriate Chinese name is part of the Chinese learning journey and is crucial for building interpersonal relationships, and (even!) moving forward in business. Using your regular name might create unnecessary distance and may contribute to having fewer intercultural or professional possibilities.
To illustrate what we mean: a carefully picked name can mean hope, wealth, love, determination and symbolize these qualities in your day-to-day interactions. The wrongly picked name can mean a disaster, failure or bad luck thus discouraging people to interact with you.
