The idea for Chineasy dates back to 2013 when our founder, ShaoLan, realized that she was determined to find a way to inspire her British-born children to learn her mother tongue, Mandarin Chinese.
To put the idea into action, ShaoLan first created a special algorithm to comb through thousands of Chinese words and came up with a list of essential characters. She then collaborated with artist Noma Bar to develop a series of award-winning illustrations which transform Chinese characters from cryptic black-and-white shapes into easy-to-understand pictograms. The Chineasy method was born, which she introduced in a rousingly well-received Ted Talk in Feb 2013 at Long Beach, California, and subsequently launched Chineasy.
